Wintergreen Procumbens EO

The Story :

Wintergreen is a small shrub with evergreen and fragrant leaves, found mainly in the forests of North America, Nepal, Canada and China. It has white flowers, sometimes pinkish or creamy, and red berries. It generally measures between 10 and 20 cm and has a very characteristic smell.

The aromatic essence contained in its berries is called “wintergreen”, which is also the name given to the plant in English. It was already used by Amerindians against pain and fever, and it is traditionally a symbol of luck and protection in Canada.

Its smell is easily recognized because its main compound, methyl salicylate, is used in many balms, creams, gels and massage oils designed to warm muscles and soothe joints.

It seems that its name comes from a French botanist, Gaulthier, the King of Canada’s doctor at the time, who made it known to his peers. Wintergreen is sometimes referred to as “Indian Wintergreen”, “Canada Tea” or “Wood Tea”.
