FAQ

What is the ecological impact of essential oil (EO) production?

Our essential oils come from organic farming and therefore, the methods of cultivation, monitoring and harvesting of our plants are environmentally friendly. Our oils are guaranteed 100% organic, no fertilizers or products are added to maximize yield, ensuring a lower impact on nature. In addition, the plantations are located in regions where each species of plant is adapted to the sun, humidity, rain… and will grow best in a natural way. No detail is overlooked to allow nature to express itself without abuse, but on the contrary to flourish.

Why should I use Essential Oils ?

Essential oils are natural concentrates with proven effectiveness in treating a wide variety of problems, diseases and ailments in everyday life. They can be used for well-being, health, beauty… they are a logical and natural alternative to conventional medicine, or in addition to conventional medicine.

Why is it so important to only use organic Essential Oil ?

An essential oil is a pure concentrate of aromatic plants obtained by a very long and rigorous distillation process. A very large quantity of plant material is required to obtain essential oils. Distillation is an important concentration process: for example, 100 to 150 kg of fine lavender flowers are required to obtain 1 kg E.O. and 1000 kg of Roman chamomile flowers or verbena leaves to obtain 1 kg E.O. Also in conventional agriculture the use of chemical fertilizers and synthetic herbicides will be found in plants and will be concentrated in essential oils by distillation. It is therefore important to use only organic essential oils to fully enjoy their benefits without harmful effects.

Are essential oils effective?

Essential oils represent a remarkably effective natural alternative to conventional medical treatments. This effectiveness has been proven on several occasions by many researchers, doctors and specialists. If an essential oil is ineffective, it is usually because the symptoms or problem have been misjudged. Self-medication with essential oils cannot therefore escape the professional advice of a doctor who alone has the necessary knowledge to make an appropriate and relevant diagnosis.

Should I keep my Essential Oils in my fridge ?

It is not necessary to store your essential oils in the refrigerator because they are extremely stable. They are antioxidant concentrates (although their percentage may vary) and no bacteria can survive more than a few minutes in any of them. They can therefore be stored at room temperature, but care should be taken to close the vials tightly after use (because EO are volatile) and to avoid exposure to sunlight.

What should I do if I have ingested too much essential oil?

The internal use of essential oils should not be taken lightly due to the high concentration of natural active ingredients. Always follow the doses and instructions prescribed by aromatherapists. In case of excessive ingestion of essential oils, go immediately to the nearest poison control centre.

What should I do if an essential oil has been in contact with my eyes?

The mucosa of the eye is extremely sensitive and precautions must be taken to avoid contact with essential oils. If your eyes are irritated and itchy after using essential oils or if your eye has received a drop, quickly bathe your eyes in vegetable oil, or soak a cotton pad in vegetable oil and apply several times by moving towards the corner of the eye near the nose. If an unpleasant sensation persists for an hour, make an appointment with an ophthalmologist as soon as possible.

What if an essential oil irritates my skin?

We advise you to do the individual sensitivity test before using an essential oil in order to avoid any allergic reaction. You put a drop in the hollow of the elbow or inside the wrist and if after 10 minutes you do not notice any reaction (redness, itching…) you can tolerate this EO. Given their very concentrated nature, it is always recommended to dilute the essential oils in a vegetable oil for cosmetic application, unless you target a very small area such as a pimple or a small wound, by choosing the appropriate essential oil.

Can I use essential oils during pregnancy?

Essential oils should not be used during the first 3 months of pregnancy. After the 4th month of pregnancy, certain Essential Oils are authorized such as Laurel Noble, Fine Lavender but preferably externally (diffusion or massage except on the stomach and chest). We still advise you to avoid self-medication when you are pregnant and ask your doctor or aromatherapist for advice.

Can I give essential oils to my children?

Essential oils are also beneficial for children, but the dosages and advice are different. Some essential oils are more recommended than others for children and vice versa. In general, essential oils should be diluted more thoroughly. The control and follow-up of advice on the use of oils is essential, as well as taking into account the conditions and age of your child. It is advisable to avoid essential oils for children under 3 years of age and to be accompanied by a competent health professional.

Are essential oils dangerous for animals?

Absolutely not, as long as the advice and precautions given to humans are respected for your pets. Like humans, animals can be allergic or sensitive to essential oils, so it is important to keep them away from sources of essential oils (especially atmospheric diffusion, which is more frequent). You can protect and care for your animals in the same way as you use natural essential oils for yourself, however we advise you to read about them in dedicated books to avoid any complications, and do not hesitate to talk to your veterinarian (the dosage in veterinary use is always proportional to the weight of the animal).

Why can’t I expose myself to the sun after using essential oils?

Some essential oils, often extracted from citrus fruits, are photosensitizing. They contain in their compositions furocoumarin which promotes the production of melanin by the skin and can cause sunburn and brown spots. It is therefore recommended to avoid any contact with the sun within 12 hours of using one of these essential oils, both internally or externally.

Can I increase the recommended doses?

It is very important to respect the recommended doses and treatment times for our essential oils. Indeed, increasing one or the other will not increase efficacy but rather toxicity. The active ingredients of essential oils make them as effective as many medicines, and the behaviour to adopt for their use must therefore be similar.

Do essential oils cause side effects?

It is possible in some cases to have allergic reactions to certain essential oils, which is why it is important to test them beforehand on a small part of the skin. In addition, some essential oils, particularly citrus zest, are photosensitizing. The latter contain in their compositions furocoumarins which promote the production of melanin by the skin and can cause sunburn and brown spots. It is recommended to avoid any contact with the sun within 12 hours of using one of these essential oils.

Among other side effects, some essential oils have a low to moderate neurotoxicity due to the presence of ketones. These can be harmful to the nervous system and especially to epileptics and young children, so they must be used occasionally and strongly diluted before any use, or they can be used externally, since the skin filters the ketones and uses them for their regenerative quality of the epidermis.

Finally, some essential oils are dermocaustic and are not recommended for use on the skin, which can cause slight burns and irritation. These products should be used in moderation and particularly diluted (less than 1%) in vegetable oil to avoid any inconvenience.

In short:

Essential oils are powerful, they require in every cases to take adequate precautions. They can sometimes have side effects, due to the user’s lack of knowledge and misuse. It is important to test them on a small area of skin before using them on a larger scale. And as with all products, if you follow the right dosage recommended by aromatherapy professionals, there is no danger.

What are the virtues of essential oils?

The virtues of essential oils are very numerous, and they generally have very specific functions because of their different concentration and composition. They can be beneficial to fight against stress and insomnia, damaged skin, joint pain, insect bites or colds and various diseases… Their applications and virtues are almost unlimited! They also have a number of disinfectant, anti-infective and healing properties for many of them.

Can I mix essential oils together?

Many essential oils can be mixed together to create synergies to target different diseases or strengthen a particular action. However, the mixture of two essential oils does not simply add their effects but multiplies them. It is therefore important not to mix some essential oils, and avoid the synergies of more than five oils. We advise you to refer to our guide of Essential Oils to know the practical formulas.

Furthermore, it is always possible to buy mixtures already prepared and manufactured by experts, such as the synergies we offer.

How long can I keep my essential oils?

French legislation requires a period of 5 years for the conservation of essential oils. However, their storage life in terms of efficiency is more likely to be 10 years, as long as they remain closed, protected from air, light and high heat or extreme cold. After 10 years, they gradually lose their properties and become progressively less active.

In short:

Essential oils are effective and totally safe up to 5 years after packaging, as long as they are stored in a good environment and in good conditions.

What makes Finesence essential oils different from others?

In 9 points that you can find on our website, we detail the requirements and steps by which our plant materials are grown, selected, harvested, distilled and analysed in order to guarantee an irreproachable quality.

How to determine if an Essential Oil is of good quality?

There are different criteria to consider when buying an essential oil. The quality can vary radically from one oil to another, and especially from one brand to another. It is advisable to refer to several indicators, and of course to avoid any brand of essential oils that do not communicate sufficiently on the methods of production and the origin of the plants. Three criteria are essential to ensure a first-class commitment:

  • A 100% natural oil, without chemicals, pesticides or fertilizers, guaranteed in particular by organic labels certified by independent control bodies.
  • A 100% pure oil, i.e. without the addition of substances or products (other essential oils, vegetable oils, turpentine, alcohol, etc.
  • A 100% Complete oil, i.e. entirely distilled, ensuring that the distillation time is long enough for all the molecules constituting the aromatic plant to have appeared.

The essential oil must mention all these criteria on its packaging and in particular its Latin name and origin. To go further, it is the environment in which the plant developed, the time and manner in which it was harvested that plays an important role in the final quality. Transparency around these characteristics is as important as the care and rigour of the distillation of vegetable materials, it is essential to guarantee perfectly defined essential oils.

Why are essential oils sometimes so expensive?

There are several reasons for the price variations of the various essential oils, mainly due to the way they are obtained. Indeed, essential oils being highly concentrated distilled or pressed extracts, the quantities of aromatic plants equivalent to 1 kg of essential oils sometimes vary widely. For example, to obtain 1kg of clove essential oil, only 7kg of floral bud is required. To obtain 1kg of fine lavender essential oil, 150kg of flowering plants are required. For 1kg of Damask Rose essential oil, 4 tons of flowers. The assurance that an oil is 100% organic is also part of the cost of reselling an essential oil, as it requires more control. The price may also be due to the rarity of the product, its location in a remote area and its low availability. Some vegetable raw materials also take much longer to be distilled, an expensive but essential process to obtain a 100% complete oil. The origin of aromatic plants is also an important factor, whether for transport or simply for the quality of the chosen soil, on which the final quality of an Oil depends. Finally, but to a lesser extent, it is the time of harvest of the plants, sometimes limited to a short period of the year, that will be taken into account in the selling price of an essential oil.

In short:

Essential oils are highly concentrated, and therefore require a lot of fresh aromatic plants to extract small amounts of essence. The yield of essential oil varies greatly from one species to another, which is one of the reasons why prices vary and why some essential oils are so expensive. Finally, the quality of the E.O., climatic hazards, rarity and certain commercial practices have an impact on prices.

What is the difference between vegetable oils and essential oils?

Vegetable oils and essential oils are very different natural substances in their compositions. Vegetable oils are oily fatty substances and contain mainly fatty acids and vitamins, they are the best nourishing material for the epidermis. Essential oils are not in the chemical sense of oils, but concentrated volatile substances rich in aromatic molecules, they provide a vitalogenic action to the skin and the entire body with particular properties depending on the species. They are not used in the same way and do not have the same indications, but they combine very well and are often used together in synergies for even more effective action. Vegetable oils are also the best support for diluting essential oils for use in cosmetics.

In short:

Vegetable oils and essential oils are very different natural substances in their compositions. They combine very well but do not act in the same way. They offer a wide range of possibilities for association in the service of your well-being.
